In the small role I play to honor our nation’s
veterans by placing flags on the graves
of fallen soldiers every Memorial
Day, I have come to know many of them.By know, I mean I have gleaned stories about them from my dad and his
dad.
I remember many of them, some quite fondly, others
as folks I have passed in life’s journey. Some delighted in reliving their service; others took their accounts
with them to the grave. All left their homes behind for the good of
us left at home. Some returned to start
a new life.A few never did.
One of those who never came back was my dad’s
childhood friend, “sacrificed” my Dad said, in the Battle of the Bulge in WWII.The first time I heard the tale was right after I had planted the tiny American flag by the military
tombstone. My Dad told me, “There’s no
one there”.It took me a moment to
realize what he meant. His friend never
came back, not even his body.Somewhere
in Europe, his remains are in a mass
grave with other brave countrymen.
Every May since, I’ve made it a point to make
certain someone is there for someone who is not.
“To save your world you asked
this man to die:
Would this man, could he see you now, ask why?”
